A few tips on healthy living
Eating is regarded as the most important path to healthy living as it is helpful in maintaining good health and at the same time, is also instrumental in heightening your ‘feel good’ factor!
You are advised to follow the following steps if you would like to ensure a healthy lifestyle.
Healthy Diet:
The following are the key factors behind the maintenance of a healthy diet.
* Make sure that you consume the right amount of calories so that you can balance the energy consumed by you with the energy used by you.
Healthy living demands usage of everything in moderation. So, avoid consuming too much food, as that can make you overweight.
At the same time, you are also advised to avoid consuming too little food as that would make you lose weight.
* Include a wide variety of foods in your diet, as that would ensure a balanced diet. This would also allow your body to have all the essential nutrients.
In order to ensure a healthier lifestyle, you can follow the following steps that cover basic steps of healthy living:
* Meals must be centered on starch-based food:
Starchy foods include cereals, potatoes, pasta, bread and rice. Choose more whole grain varieties as these foods would help you feel fuller for a longer period of time.
Starchy foods must constitute around one third of your total amount of food.
* Consume lots of vegetables and fruits:
Five servings of different varieties of fruits and vegetables are recommended for consumption in a day. One glass of fruit juice counts as one portion.
Vegetables used in dishes also count. You can have a fruit along with cereals for breakfast or dry fruits as a mid morning snack. So, having 5 servings a day is not as tough as it seemed primarily.
* Include fish in your diet:
Fish, apart from being a rich source of protein, also consists of minerals and vitamins. Try to have at least 2 portions of fish in your diet, including oily fish. As oily fish is rich in omega 3 fat, it is helpful in preventing heart problems.
You can go in for both fresh as well as canned or frozen forms of fish, but remember canned fish is usually high in salt content. Salmon, trout, mackerel, herring, sardines, and fresh tuna are some of the varieties of oily fish.
Non oily fishes include plaice, haddock, coley, tinned tuna, cod, etc. If you love fish, include as many varieties as possible in your diet.
* Cut down on your fat and sugar intake:
Although fat is an essential part of our diet, it is essential to watch out for the type of fat we are consuming.
There are two types of fat - unsaturated fat and saturated fat. Too much of saturated fat could increase the level of cholesterol in your blood, thereby aggravating risks of developing heart problems.
Foods like cakes, biscuits, sausages, pies butter, hard cheese and cream are rich in saturated fat. Cut down on these foods and instead, opt for oily fish, avocados, and vegetable oils.
* Eat less salt:
Since eating too much of salt can increase your blood pressure level, cut down on your salt intake.
* Be active and maintain healthy weight:
Commendable eating habits ensure maintenance of a healthy lifestyle. While being overweight can lead to problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease, being underweight can also cause serious health issues.
In case you are looking forward to losing weight, you are advised to aim at cutting down on foods that are rich in fat or sugar content.
Instead, consume plenty of vegetables and fruits. Also, remember that cutting down on foods on your own accord may lead to serious health issues.
So, always get in touch with your dietician in order to help you decide on a balanced diet!
* Drink lots of water:
Drink around 6 to 8 glasses of water daily in order to prevent dehydration. Avoid soft or fizzy drinks, as they are high on sugar content.
* Do not skip breakfast:
Since breakfast is considered as the most important meal of the day, never skip it.
Apart from these eating habits, also ensure that you are part of a clean and healthy surrounding in order to retain a healthy lifestyle.
