The Magic of Liquid Diets

With more and more people becoming figure and health conscious, liquid diets are gaining popularity. As the name suggests, the diet revolves around consuming liquids and avoiding solid food items.

What is a Liquid Food Diet?

While on a liquid diet you essentially consume only liquids or mostly liquids. In this way, you try to control the number of calories you consume by restricting the intake. You can have shakes, broths or juices instead of your regular meals.

When are Liquid Diets used?





Liquid diets are generally recommended

* If you are overweight and wish to lose the extra pounds
* If you suffer from gastrointestinal problems
* If you are about to undergo bariatric surgery


Benefits of Liquid Diets


Liquid diets are very useful. They help obese people to lose weight. They also make your skin look younger as well as more vibrant. They detoxify and tone the body. They also increase your energy levels.

Doing a Liquid Diet

Liquid diets are usually done for a short period of time as drastic restriction in terms of calories over a long period is not healthy. The following are the steps to follow for a liquid diet.

* Decide the time period for your diet. A few people follow the liquid diet for a day every week. Others prefer to go on a liquid diet for 3 to 7 days.

* Make sure you do not start a liquid diet in stressful times. It is imperative that you a do not start a liquid diet while in a state of relative rest.

* Shop for all you need. You will require plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, herbal teas and water. The quality of food you consume while on this diet is very important as your nutrition during the period is limited.

Hence it is necessary that the food you consume gives you that maximum nutrients and has very low or no chemicals. It is better to go for only organic products.

* Water is the main component of this diet. You should consume at least 8 glasses of water every day. Also, you should not take more than 3 glasses of fruit/vegetable juice in a day.

Vegetable juice or froth should be given preference over fruit juice as vegetables have more digestive enzymes. There is no restraint on herbal teas, provided you drink it without sweetener.

* Always carry juice or broth while travelling. You might need them in case of an emergency situation.

* Strenuous exercises are not a part of this kind of a diet. It is good to take long walks, but make sure that you do not sweat profusely. The body needs adequate rest during a liquid diet.

* After you are through with your liquid diet, you need to come back to your normal diet consisting of solid food items.

This should be gradually and carefully done over a period of a few days. You should start with cooked vegetables and soups. Then you can slowly add fruits and whole grains. Heavy food items are difficult to digest and hence should be introduced at last.   

Choices while on a Liquid Diet



You can have vegetable broth, clear fruit ices, black coffee, black tea, clear fruit juices, bouillon, clear gelatine desserts and popsicles.

The purpose of a liquid diet is to maintain the levels of body fluids, salts and minerals. The body absorbs the liquid food easily and digestive system gets some rest while toxins, wastes and unwanted chemicals are flushed out.
