Understanding your value while you age
Ageing is something that levels all people. Whether the person had been a bombshell or an intellectual person with looks taking a backseat, the drooping eyelids in the mirror shock everyone.
These aesthetic concerns may be easily dismissed as weak, but as many argue, the struggle to adjust to your changing looks may be as daunting as dealing with divorce or demotion at workplace or some financial loss.
Some counselors say that this dread of age may spur some sort of existential crisis. This does not concern vanity though, but it is rooted in the thought of losing potential and questioning their place and role in the world. This may lead to sleep disorders, alcohol abuse or depression.
Therapy does not offer solutions to these people but expensive face creams or laser treatments do.
Counselors tell women that despite their many achievements admitting that the very thought of ageing is upsetting is not in the very least bit superficial. The women should find out the reason for their daydreams about good facelifts before going in for one.
Nowadays, cosmetic surgery has become a casual and common thing to do and as a consequence injections for anti-ageing are inevitable.
A new guide to help the women, “Face It”, lays down a few practical steps so that the women can analyze their feelings for cosmetic surgery and anti-ageing injections as a whole.
The authors put up the question whether women should grow old naturally due to the fact that looks do not define somebody, or whether they should fight all signs of ageing as youth and beauty gives them power and currency.
However, the answer is a very complex one, keeping in view the information of the patients over a span of 20 years.
Women have this urge to look younger than they really are. It should be kept in mind that 60 is not 40, 60 is 60. Women often feel insulted by their ageing as appearance matters a lot to them.
The book contains intriguing stories about women who get surprised by the fact that they mourn their veiny legs and sags. There is the incident where a science researcher 53 years old always thought herself not to be bothered by such things as ageing.
But she found out that she did care about her looks when she cancelled a trip to the beach when she realized she did not look good in her swimsuit.
This aesthetic sense may prove to be very stressful. Even a child has to become conscious about her body, which was a distant prospect for her mother. In those days however, they did not care too much about body image.
Morality plays an important role in the calculation of acceptability. Cosmetic surgeries which are too obvious are looked down upon and ridiculed.
The masses worship those 60+ actresses who according to them have the guts to be natural and not take the help of cosmetic procedures (like Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep), who think they are above any kind of self doubt.
As a result of this, the tolerant attitude of Mirren towards cosmetic procedures instead of staunch opposition, created a mildly unsettling feeling among her fans. Counselors urge that women should savor the future instead of stewing in the past.
