Emotional Aftermath Connected with Plastic Surgery

There are very few patients who tend to think of the emotional impact of plastic surgeries before they opt to change their looks surgically.

Even if they give it a thought, it is usually centered on positive impacts rather than on the negative ones. Although most of you are excited with the positive impact of plastic surgeries, there are also significant emotional changes caused by plastic surgeries.

Post Surgical Depression

Post-surgical depression is extremely common in the field of plastic surgery although it is the least discussed issue. Even surgeons prefer to avoid this topic of discussion. Let us discuss the most popular issues that may contribute to post surgical depressions.

Effect of anesthesia:

Patients are put under general anesthesia in case of any surgery. The chemicals that are used in this case tend to remains in the body tissues and have the potential to disturb you mentally or physically for as long as three weeks.

They may induce problems like depression and lethargy, and may even bring you down to a teary state or utter despair. These negative effects tend to increase with the patient’s age.

Medications for pain:

Post surgical patients are often induced narcotizing pain killers, which are categorized under depressants. It does not mean that these pain killers invariably lead to depression but just that it means it would slow down the rate of your activities, similar to the effects of alcohol. Reactions to pain medicines may vary depending upon your health.

Physical restrictions:

Just as you must be already aware, you can never be your earlier self till at least a few days after your surgery. This may lead to feelings of helplessness, boredom or restlessness.

The battered and bruised look: Not only do you feel sick after a surgery, but you also feel depressed. This is caused not only by medicines but also by the torn and bruised look.

Remember that these conditions are part of a temporary phase. Just as everything changes with time, patients also pass through this post surgical depression.

Thing to do to get rid of post surgical depression

Strong family support:

Support from friends and family is crucial during this phase. Make sure that you are supported by your parents, siblings, spouses and children.

Support from loved ones, especially if the person has gone through a plastic surgery, may prove crucial, as that gives you an opportunity to share your anxieties and feelings.

Organize your recovery room before surgery:

It is better to organize your room before you go through surgery. Arrange everything from your television sets to books and everything that you may think would be essential when you are recovering.

Follow the instructions of your surgeon:

Follow the instructions and take your medicines properly and abstain from strenuous activities as advised by your surgeon or doctor. Do not touch your stitches, as it may lead to a negative outcome and can even worsen your condition.

Please do not start working until you are advised to do so by your physician. Although you may not be able to eat properly for few days, try to have nutritious dishes and fruits to make your healing process faster. It is also advisable to avoid alcohol till your doctor permits you to do so.

Get in touch with your physician whenever required:

Remember that your surgeon is trained enough to confront both physical as well as mental upheavals post surgery. Do not hesitate to get in touch with him or her whenever essential.

Conclusion

The reactions are usual to patients in case of any surgery, and are definitely not typical with plastic surgeries. So, be confident and face the consequences of plastic surgery in a more positive light as you are not the only one to suffer post surgical disturbances.
