‘Perineal massage’ is not a very common term for people across the world. Strangely, most people are not aware that something like perineal massage exists.
Perineal massage can be referred to as a mild stretching and massaging of the perineum.
Perineum is the skin that exists between the anus and vagina. The massage is usually given to a woman during the last few days or weeks of pregnancy.
The basic motive of the massage is to reduce the frequency of episiotomy and problems such as perineal tears during the process of childbirth.
The massage works because it prevents the perineal tissues from lengthening. The massage is done via using cold pressed oil. This helps in lubricates the tissue.
It also makes the tissue softer and supple. This ultimately results in enhancing the flexibility of the tissues to a greater extent. The tissues are prepared to stretch during the process of childbirth.
Perineal massage is beneficial for mother as it makes her familiar with stretching sensations that she would feel when the baby is born.
This also facilitates her learn to keep the vital perineal relaxed while stretching of crowning. This also helps in preventing any kind of tears that is normal during childbirth.
What is the best way to give perineal massage?
Perineal massage can be given by anyone. It can be given by a certified nurse, mother of the pregnant woman or her partner.
For effective massage session, the mother should be in a comfortable position. She should sit in a reclining/sitting position.
The position should be such that it offers direct and comfortable access to the skin in the region of the vagina. The massage can be done for up to ten minutes in a day. The most favorable period for giving the massage is the last 4 weeks of pregnancy.
Here are some tips you need to follow when giving perineal massage to a pregnant woman:
* You must wash and disinfect your hands thoroughly.
* Make sure that you have no sharp/long nails as these may scratch and hurt the mother.
* The key to effective massage is to locate the perineum. This is located directly below the vagina. It is actually the skin that exists between the vagina and the anus.
* Once you locate the perineum, apply some cold pressed oil such as olive oil to the area. Place your thumbs at the base of the vagina.
Now allow it to slide in to the vagina. This should be up to the first joint. Make sure you move some oil with your thumb as you move towards the vagina.
* Use gentle yet firm pressure and move your thumbs from the bottom of the vagina upwards the side walls. This should feel that you are creating a "U".
* Now return the thumbs to the bottom of the vagina.
* Repeat the whole procedure.
* Perineal massage can be given to the mother before bath or shower. A daily massage routine will give her a lot of comfort.
