Review of some great hair loss products

Getting hair loss completely cured is not possible. However, there are a number of shampoos, conditioners, drugs and other topical hair loss solutions available. Many of these treatments are not scientifically proven to have any positive effect on hair loss.

There are only two drugs that are approved by the FDA, namely, finasteride (Propecia®) and minoxidil (Rogaine®).

Even though both these products have been found to be effective against hair loss, their results last only as long as the medicines are taken. Whichever hair loss product you use, make sure you consult a physician before that. Here are some of the hair loss products that you can use to regrow your hair.


1. Rogaine

It is the brand name for the drug minoxidil. It is a vasodilator. It slows down the rate of hair fall and covers up the look of baldness.  You can acquire this either by prescription or over the counter, depending on the fact whether the solution is strong or not.

It comes in the form of an ointment that is to be massaged on the scalp twice a day. It helps to grow new hair, especially on the crown region of the scalp. You can use shampoos containing minoxidil to grow new hair or block hair loss.

2. Loniten

It is the pill form of minoxidil. Originally used as a treatment against blood pressure, it was found out that one of its side effects was to grow hair. This made Loniten a prescription drug against hair loss.

Though it stimulates hair growth, it also has some unwanted side effects like amplified heart rate, breathing problem, drug interactions and salt and water retention. That is why loniten is prescribed in much less frequency than other minoxidil containing drugs like rogaine.

3. Propecia

The brand name for finasteride, propecia is an oral pill against hair loss. It was initially launched under the brand name of Proscar in order to treat enlarged prostates among men.

As time passed, it was noticed that the use of propecia led to new hair growth and reduced thinning of strands. Thus, use of propecia began as a hair loss treatment.

Propecia is also effective against female baldness and hair loss. You can get it only through a prescription. You have to be very cautious in taking those pills.

Pregnant women need to be careful while taking this medicine and it is not recommended for pre-menopausal women. You can use shampoos containing finasteride and get amazing results against hair loss.

4. Proscar 

It was introduced mainly as a treatment against prostate enlargement. Patients taking this medicine found new hair on their scalp and this led Proscar to be an approved hair loss treatment.

5. Avodart 

Like Proscar, it was also prescribed initially for enlarged prostates. It contains the drug dustasteride which is associated with a diminished thinning of hair and development of new strands.

Dustasteride was found to be more effective than finasteride because it could block almost 95 percent of DHT formation, whereas the latter could block 70 percent of it. The use of drug is currently being investigated by the FDA.

6. Retin-A

It is a topical drug mainly prescribed as a treatment of different skin problems and also as a hair loss treatment. It also leads to better absorption of minoxidil into hair follicles, thus improving the results in some patients.

These are some good hair loss products that can be used to fight hair loss effectively.
