80s Hairstyles – Ostentatious, Crazy and Wild!

Every era had its own set of hair styles which reflected the fashion statement of that era. The 80s hair styles were crazy and fun.

The 80s hair styles were flamboyant. They were all about experimentation, excess and too much use of hairspray was the order of the time.

The varieties ranged from frizzy hair to absolutely asymmetrical waves, to the funky and cool side ponytails. In the 1980s, people used their hair to create their own fashion statement hardly caring about what others would think.

The hairstyles were influenced to a great extent by the popular cultural bands of the time like Sisters of Mercy, Bananarama, etc.

The hair styles were no doubt avant-garde; cuts were out-of-the-box and very unconventional colors were used.

The hair styles used to consist of innovative spikes and strange angles and hair stylists of that era came up with such styles and cuts that added volume to a person’s hair.

Some of the most popular hair styles of 1980s were:

Asymmetrical Wave

The asymmetrical haircuts were brought about by the New Wave music uprising of the 80s. In this type of hair style, the hair was normally kept longer on one side than the other or the hair was cut in a bowl shape having angles.

Side Ponytail

The singing sensation Debbie Gibson used to wear her hair in a ponytail on one side. The look was simple and became very popular among teen girls. Bangs were given a feathered look to match the ponytail.

Mullets

A unisex hair style, mullets consisted of short layers of hair surrounding the face and long hair having a single layer at the back of the head.

This hair style was the fashion statement of the rock stars of that time and thus became quite popular.

Jersey Girl

It was done usually on long or medium length hair. The entire hair was cut in layers. With the help of rollers, the hair was given lot of altitude in this type of hair style. Heavy usage of hair spray was normal as it helped to set the hair and keep it in place.

Tails

This hair style was adopted by both males and females. In this type of hair style, a little section of hair in the center of the neck was left long and the remaining hair was cut short.

The small section was often given some other color to give it a contrasting look. This was called the tailed look which became famous in the period of the 80s.

For men...

The men’s hair styles of the 80s were mainly notable because of their colors and hair lengths. If you are interested in trying 80s hair styles, then you have several options like punk style, rocker style and wavy cut styles.

If you have curly long hair, try out the rocker style, as it will add fullness to your unmanageable hair.

Wavy cut style is ideal for you if your face is sleek and hair is thin and curly. Punk styles look great on men with straight and long hair. A middle parting and bangs on the side will bring your eyes into the limelight.

For women …

Women of that period tried different shapes and colors on their hair. Most of the hair styles were a result of imitating some celebrity.

Be it funky ponytails, wave style, asymmetrical or mullets, give them a try as 80s hair styles are back with a bang. So chill, you won’t be laughed at if you go out on the streets with such hair styles.
