Touchscreen Steering Wheel Makes Your Journey Safe
‘Touchscreen’ is a revolutionary technology in the world of gadgets at present. However, how will it be to have a touchscreen gesture based steering wheel in our cars?
Can you imagine a situation where we do not have to hold or rotate our gesture enabled steering; just a touch will serve the purpose.
Recently, at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, a group of researchers from the University of Duisburg-Essen, University of Stuttgart, and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence has revealed a demo model of a steering wheel which is touchscreen based.
The wheel is an acrylic body having a width of only 11 mm. The wheel contains infrared LEDs, which are in a ring system.
An advanced infrared camera, which is fitted at the bottom side of the wheel, senses the reflections of the drivers when they touch the screen.
The technology of this touchscreen steering wheel is mainly based on sensor systems. This system is ideal for checking traffic and road conditions.
While driving, a driver can easily navigate a road map or access the music system without taking his hands off the steering wheel.
The objective of this invention is to reduce accidents due to carelessness. When a driver is on a long distance drive, it sometimes happens that while changing songs or their AC temperature, the driver loses his or her concentration, resulting in deadly accidents.
Now, with the help of this sensor-based steering wheel, it is possible for the drivers to control the other different functions of a car while driving without shifting his or her vision from the road. The design alerts and helps the driver to maintain his or her concentration.
A professor of computer science, Albrecht Schmidt, who is playing a major role in this project assured that the rate of accidents will be reduced a lot using this type of steering mechanism as drivers will get sufficient time to focus on their driving.
The researchers are still developing their innovation to make it more popular to implement in future vehicles.
While working on the model of this steering mechanism, they consulted different participants about up to date movements and gestures that are being used on technology based devices and created gestures for around 20 commands.
Some new features like zoom in and zoom out are needed to be incorporated into the system. Moreover, after establishing different commands, tests on the wheel have been performed in a simulator, which proved that the time required by a driver to divert his vision from the road is comparatively lower than a conventional steering wheel and this mode of driving is very safe.
Automotive organizations are also showing their interest in implementing this touchscreen technology in their future vehicles to assure customers a more safe and sound journey.
